San Joaquin/Calaveras County Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Program Information

OVERVIEW:

  • Earn while you learn – On the Job Training (approx. 40 hours per week)
  • Related training – approximately 200 hours per year
  • Starting hourly rate – currently $16.65/hour + Benefits
  • Length of Apprenticeship Program = 5 years
  • No cost or fees for Program/Training to you

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Must appear in person to complete an application form
  • Must present a high school diploma or G.E.D. at time of application or no later than the following Friday before noon
  • Must present high school or College transcripts showing that you have passed Algebra with a “C” Grade or better (one full year of high school or one semester of College at time of application or no later than Friday at noon
  • Must provide us with a current (no older than 30 days) DMV printout for your driving history at time of application or no later than Friday at noon
  • Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade and be willing and able to attend ALL required classes or related instruction
  • Individuals who can verify (by providing undisputable evidence) that they have worked 4000 hours specifically in the electrical construction trade will qualify for an oral interview
  • Military Veterans:  Submit a detailed DD-214 to verify any military training and/or experience if you are a veteran and wish to receive consideration for such training/experience

Other Conditions:

  • Normal insurability to operate employer owned vehicles is defined as the ability to secure insurance coverage without high risk premium or cancellation
  • Drug Testing will be required before placement
  • Candidates will be required to sign a training contract repayment plan
  • No guarantee of employment is implied.  Applicants that are accepted will be added to an existing eligibility pool only

Qualifying Exams:

  • All applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be scheduled to take a timed written aptitude test to show comprehension of algebraic functions and reading comprehension.  Sample test questions are mailed to you with your test notification.  The test will be administered at a future date following the application date.  Applicants that take and do not pass the test may retake the test no sooner than six months from their previous test date.

  • Those who receive a passing grade of 4 or better will be notified by mail as to the time and date of the oral interview.  Oral interviews will be held as needed.  Successful applicants will then be placed on the eligibility list and will be ranked according to interview score.  The eligibility list will be prepared by the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, which is a non-discriminatory, equal opportunity organization.  Each successful applicant, in compliance with the “California Plan”, will remain on the eligibility list for twenty-four (24) months following their interview date.
  • Applicants are responsible for maintaining a current address and phone number with the Apprenticeship Office.  Upon failure to reach an applicant due to an incorrect phone number or address, the Apprenticeship Office reserves the right to remove the applicant from the active files.
  • This is an Equal Opportunity Program and is registered and approved by the U.S. Department of Labor and the State of California.
  • Previous knowledge of Electrical Work is not required.
  • Application/Interview DOES NOT guarantee employment.

Characteristics of the Trade:

The Electrical Apprenticeship is a five (5) year program which includes paid on-the-job training and mandatory school attendance

The Apprentice shall be under the supervision of a Journeyman Electrician.  Physical effort required may involve climbing, crawling, crouching and working in cramped quarters.  Wiring is frequently color coded for connection purposes.  Mechanical ability and finger dexterity is essential.  Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, below grade ditches and trenches or above grade on ladders of scaffolding.  Apprentice assignments are generally limited to San Joaquin and Calaveras Counties.  All apprentices are subject to drug testing.
